Its very hard to whet your appetite without spoilers but suffice to say that not everything proceeds along the well trodden path we have come to expect and there are some surprises in store for the reader. A dark and hopeless picture is painted as Bess leaves the Foundling Hospital empty handed. The father is now dead and there is little hope that Bess will be able to save the necessary fee for regaining her daughter. Bess is no fool and whilst she has given up her baby to the Foundling Hospital she has every intention of reclaiming her when she feels able to support her, a single mother for our times. Stacey Halls brings the Georgian heroine into the 21st century with her energy and self sufficiency. But this tale does have some surprises in store. This is a well trodden path for fiction lovers the tale of a good hearted girl whose life is changed for ever by the selfish actions of an amoral richer, older man of means.
